Studio Arts

Jen Barrows is an adjunct faculty in the Photography department and the Director of Academic Computing at the College of Art and Design. She teaches analog and digital darkroom techniques in addition to studio lighting. Jen has an MFA from The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and Tufts University. Her interdisciplinary work deals with the construction of the American identity both in how it is represented and how it is lived in.

Cherry received his BFA from Northern Arizona University where he began painting as a figural artist exploring domestic narratives. After receiving his MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where he attended with the Presidential Fellowship, he set up his studio practice and began to exhibit around Chicago and the Midwest in galleries such as Lyons-Wier, Gescheidle, and fifty-50.

He has taught and guest lectured at: School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Ox-Bow, the University of Chicago, the Evanston Art Center, and Pennsylvania College of Art and Design. His solo exhibition at Pennsylvania College of Art and Design debuted his titan-sized nude portraits entitled someBODIES. He has served as Dean of English, Fine Arts, and Humanities at South Suburban College; and Academic Dean at Pennsylvania College of Art and Design. He is currently Associate Professor and Chair of the Fine Arts and Foundation departments here at the College of Art and Design. His work has been featured in several volumes of New American Paintings and in multiple issues of Poets and Artists.

Michael David is a Professor of Fine Arts focusing on painting and printmaking. He holds an MFA in Painting from Boston University (1980), a BA in Fine Arts from Brandeis University (1977), and is a graduate of the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture (1981). He has held over thirty solo exhibitions around Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, and San Francisco.

Andrew Fish is a Boston-based painter who studied at School of Visual Arts in NYC and has attended several artist residencies. He exhibits internationally and is the recipient of a 2020 Painting award from Mass Cultural Council, a Somerville Arts Council grant, a NY Studio School Award, a Contemporary Arts Center-Woodside Award, and the Curators Choice Award from the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition. Recent exhibitions include the Painting Center, NYC, Lamont Gallery at Phillips Exeter, and Concord Center for Visual Arts. Solo shows include Childs Gallery, Boston, Framingham State University, and 621 Gallery in Tallahassee, Fla. Fish currently teaches at Massachusetts College of Art and Design and Lesley Art +Design.

Santiago Hernandez teaches Advanced Projects in Painting, Abstract Painting, Collage, Mixed Media Assemblage, Abstract Drawing, and Interdisciplinary Studio courses here at the College of Art and Design. In addition to his teaching and professional work as a painter, Santiago is a professional musician. He plays jazz drums and Afro-Cuban percussion. He performs regularly in the Boston area with various ensembles and his own jazz trio.

David Hilliard exhibits his photographs both nationally and internationally and has won numerous awards such as the Fulbright and Guggenheim. His photographs can be found in many important collections including the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

His work is represented by the Yancey Richardson Gallery in New York, Carroll and Sons Gallery in Boston, Jackson Fine Art in Atlanta, The Schoolhouse Gallery in Provincetown, MA and in Paris at La Galerie Particuliere. In 2005 a collection of his photographs was published in a monograph by Aperture Press. His newest monograph, What Could Be, was released by Minor Matters Books in 2014. In 2017 David received a fellowship from the Massachusetts Cultural Council for outstanding work (his project with his father titled “Sans Means Without”).

Camilla Jerome (she/her) is a chronically ill and disabled artist from Massachusetts. Her photographic, installation, text, and video work spans from autobiographic and documentary imagery to private performances to experimental camera-less photography. Her self-revelatory practice is always on the emotional edge, a form of therapy, a form of art, and a profound journey inward. Jerome’s work explores the intersections of disability, visuality, time, beauty, and gender.

Jerome holds an MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and a BFA from Lesley Art and Design. She is also a member of Boston's artist collective, Recently.

Michelle Lougee is a fiber artist, sculptor, and ceramist who explores material confusion by expressing observed parallels between plastic and our environment in artwork that addresses the impact of our consumerist society on nature. Often produced from post-consumer plastic that would otherwise find its way to a landfill, Lougee’s woven knotted forms and striking juxtapositions illustrate a framework of tension between material and concept, while contemplating profound problems in our culture and environment.

Michelle Lougee received a BFA and an MFA in Sculpture from Boston University College of Fine Arts. Her artwork has been recognized by numerous exhibitions, public art commissions, reviews, residencies, and grants. Recently her practice has expanded to include community based collaborative public art projects for Arlington, MA and MassAudubon with public art curator and activist Cecily Miller.

Lougee’s artwork has been shown locally at the Peabody Essex Museum, Heritage Museum and Gardens, and the Wilson Museum in Manchester, VT. She is represented by Boston Sculptors Gallery and also exhibits in national and international venues. Her work is in the collections of Google, Framingham State University, MassAudubon Magazine Beach Nature Center, MediTech and AbiLabs. She teaches sculpture and fiber arts at Lesley University College of Art and Design.

Vivian is a faculty member in the College of Art and Design. Before joining Lesley, Vivian was a mentor in a photography apprenticeship program for high school students at the Manchester Craftsmen's Guild, and was an artist in residence in Pittsburgh public high schools. She then became an artist teacher at the Children's Studio Public Charter School for the Arts and Architecture in Washington DC. 

As an artist and educator, Vivian engages the arts as a process of investigation both in and out of the classroom. Her photographic work examines a number of issues ranging from history, migration and cultural assimilation to the passing of time. She is American, born in Mexico of Cuban parents and lived in Guatemala and Colombia before moving to the U.S. This complicated trajectory informs all of her work. Read about her family's history.

Vivian is the 2017 recipient of the Massachusetts Art Education Association's Massachusetts Higher Education Art Educator of the Year award.

As a working ceramic artist, Schön exposes students to the wide-ranging professional practice of contemporary ceramics and sculpture. She challenges students to draw on a rich variety of historic multi-cultural ceramic traditions. Her technical demonstrations emphasize the expressive potential of both wheel-throwing and hand-building methods. Schön encourages creative exploration in her courses by asking students to reach beyond their first ideas, making iterative evolutions of form, and discovering diverse possibilities for material interpretation and manipulation. Students use the concrete evidence of their work to reflect on their artistic process, generate new ideas, and develop future work with clearer intention.

Sarah Slavick is a member of the Fine Arts faculty here at the College of Art and Design. Her focus has been drawing, painting, and professional development. She holds an MFA in Painting from Pratt Institute and a BA in Studio Art from Wesleyan University.

Maya Stern is a Rhode Island-based printmaking and fiber artist whose work considers the slippage and distortion of ancestral memories. Stern received her MFA from Syracuse University in 2021 and their BFA from the University of Rhode Island in 2016. Her work has been exhibited internationally with most recent shows at ArtLink Gallery (Fort Wayne, IN), ArtSpace 304 (Carbondale, IL), Gallery 7 (Madison, WI), Governors Island (New York City), sUgAR Gallery (Fayetteville, AK), and the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition (Brooklyn, NY). They are the recent recipient of the Printmaking Today State of the Art Prize, the Merion Behr Printmaking Award, Best in Show at the Four Rivers Print Biennial, the Trust at Governors Island Summer Artist Residency, and the Graduate Fellowship from the Southern Graphics Council International. Her work has been collected by The Jyväskylä Art Museum (Jyväskylä, Finland), The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (Chicago, IL), Zuckerman Museum of Art (Dallas, TX), Syracuse University Art Museum (Syracuse, NY), and the Bend Gallery (Chicago, IL). Currently, Maya is a Part-Time Lecturer at Lesley University & Roger Williams University and Exhibition Assistant at Brown University.

Brian Unwin is an adjunct instructor in the Photography department here at the College of Art and Design. He has taught Lecture Lab II, Black and White Photography II, Color Photography, and Black and White Independent Study. He holds a BFA in Photography from Massachusetts College of Art (1999).
