The Lesley College of Art and Design is pleased to showcase the work of cartoonist and illustrator Dave Ortega. "Dave Ortega: Hacienda and Other Comics" celebrates the artist’s work in the spheres of comic art, zines, and graphic novels, as well as his narratives that tell the stories of the Mexican and Mexican American histories that are deeply rooted in Ortega’s life and familial lineage.
Central to the exhibition is "Hacienda, Issue I," which is the artist’s most recent publication of four short stories published in 2022. The exhibit includes his graphic novel "Dias de Consuelo," “a tender biography filled with struggle and hope, [the novel] brings to life the memories of the author’s abuela as they coincide with the storm of events that framed one of the most important uprisings of the 20th century: The Mexican Revolution.” It will also include "River, 2022," "Dichos and Dichos 2, 2014 and 2017" respectively, and "School of the Americas," a zine that features graduates of the controversial training ground located in Fort Benning, Georgia, where Latin American dictators and military leaders have been trained in counterinsurgency including torture, kidnapping. and blackmail.
There will be a closing reception on March 2 from 6-8 pm. "Dave Ortega: Hacienda and Other Comics" is open by appointment only. Please contact Andrew Mroczek (andrew.mroczek@lesley.edu) to schedule your visit.
